Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids. Bacteria can be found normally on the eyelids, just as there is normal bacteria on our skin. When there is too much bacteria the skin becomes red and inflamed. Excess bacteria causes crusting along the eyelid and eyelashes creating a sticky environment that traps dead skin cells and other debris. Since the eyelids are difficult to clean, this overgrowth of bacteria, scurf and debris can accumulate over time.
Constant eyelid irritation damages glands important for tear stability. Symptoms include gritty, dry eyes and blurry vision.
