What Does Diabetes Mean for Your Eyes?

diabetic retinopathy 2

With vigilant and regular eye examinations, you can reduce the risk of diabetic eye disease. Diabetes may cause your vision to “fluctuate” making your vision clear during parts of your day and blurry at other times. Diabetes may also cause premature development of cataracts or clouding of the lens. The most significant damage caused by diabetes is the damage to the retina. This includes bleeding, swelling and abnormal blood vessel growth. No one should lose vision to diabetes with close monitoring.and careful blood sugar control.

Diabetes Facts
Diabetes has become one of the most prevalent diseases in industrialized nations. Diabetes is a condition in which a person has chronically high levels of sugar in the blood. Often called the “silent killer” because symptoms can appear in the later stages of the disease.
There are many ways diabetes can damage the eyes, including the following:
Blurry or Double Vision, Diabetic Retinopathy,
Cataracts, and Glaucoma.

Scheduling regular eye exams can help detect diabetes-related eye diseases before they cause irreversible damage.
Exercise, a healthy diet and keeping glucose levels and blood pressure controlled can also help control eye problems.

Optical Lab Tour
Peg, Nannette and Hillary visited one of our optical laboratories a couple of weeks ago. They observed the whole process of selecting lens blanks, grinding power, edging lenses, coating lenses, tinting lenses, verifying power, and mounting the finished lens into the frame.
