Our new testing instrument has arrived. The SD-OCT (Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomographer), provides another tool for earlier detection and confirmation of eye diseases. I will prescribe OCT testing for suspected conditions such as glaucoma, macular degenerations and other ocular health concerns.
There is also a screening exam available – the iWellness Exam. This is designed to detect signs of eye disease before they are revealed in an eye examination. I will keep you up-to-date as we incorporate this amazing device into the practice.
Glaucoma The diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma is one of the reasons we added the OCT to our testing arsenal. The OCT measures the nerve fiber layer (the amount of nerve tissue around the optic nerve). It also measures the ganglion cell layer. Both measurements can indicate loss due to increased intra-ocular pressure and glaucoma. The diagnosis of glaucoma isn’t made with this test alone, but in combination with other test results and factors.
Epiretinal Membrane
An Epiretinal Membrane or Cellophane Retinopathy is a condition that the OCT would confirm and assist in monitoring change. Epiretinal Membrane is sometimes simply referred to as a “wrinkle”. In most cases, a Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD) has occurred. The vitreous activity causes the macula to generate cells and create a scar-like membrane. This thin tissue layer can contract and cause a wrinkle. This wrinkling distorts the vision and causes blurriness. It can resolve on it’s own, but usually stabilizes and results in blurry vision in the effected eye.
We also brought back personalized IZOD frames we saw at Vision Expo. There are 4 styles in clear zyl and 9 temple colors to create an individualized frame.
