Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease that can lead to long-term damage of the nerve in the eye.
Most types of glaucoma are caused by increased pressure in the eye, but “low tension” glaucoma can be even more dangerous because it is more difficult to detect.
Glaucoma affects side vision (peripheral vision) first. Late in the disease, glaucoma may cause “tunnel vision,” where only things straight ahead are visible. If the disease is allowed to progress without treatment even central vision can be seriously damaged.
Loss of vision due to glaucoma is permanent. Treatment is intended to prevent loss of vision, it doesn’t reverse vision loss.
